METZ BICENTENNIAL GRAND CARILLON

IU - BLOOMINGTON, IN

Indiana University constructed a grand carillon bell tower at the Bloomington, IN campus. The 91-foot-tall tower contains 65 bells, which qualifies it to be a grand carillon, of which there are fewer than 30 worldwide. The project was initially released as a traditional design – bid – build delivery method and the bids came in well over budget. Weddle was awarded the project as a Construction Manager at Risk. Though the design team was not under Weddle’s contract, we followed the same Pre-Construction process to deliver the project on time for 41% less than initially budgeted. Some of the design changes included reducing the height from 165’ tall to 126’, eliminating the jalousie windows that surrounded the bells, and replacing them with louvers. This was both a schedule and cost control savings for the project.
